A universal hand grenade that, thanks to its body, can be used both for offense and defense. This possibility is achieved by removing the body with ready-made striking elements, which turns it from defensive to offensive. Without this body, the DM51 hits the target exclusively with fragments of the main body and its high-explosive effect, because all the ready-made striking elements are contained in the removable body.
Since 1974, the grenade has been modified several times, with the DM51A1 receiving a different detonator. It is unknown what changed in the DM51A2, but the DM51A3, which has been in service since 2006, received a modified fuze.
