The PTM-4 mine consists of an elongated steel body in the shape of a semi-cylinder and includes: a non-contact detonator with a magnetic target sensor, a pyrotechnic retarder ring, an executive-detonating mechanism, a programmable electro-tactile self-destruction device; a charge of explosive material with a jelly-like cumulative coating and a detonation device, containing an orientation device in flight and on the ground surface in the form of a spring-loaded fabric cover.
When fired from a cassette, module, aviation container block or RBC, the main part of a rocket projectile, poison, other carriers, the pyrotechnic retarding ring is ignited and the mechanical protection stage is removed, the aiming device is opened and the mine is stabilized in flight with the surface of the semi-cylinder towards the ground. After landing or ricocheting off the ground, the mine is set with a cumulative facing towards the upper hemisphere, after which the aiming device cover is fired and the detonator is transferred to the combat position. The PTM-4R mine has an additional manual cocking device and can be installed by a sapper in the ground with a thin (1-2 cm) camouflage layer.
When the tank passes over a mine, the magnetic sensor, the detonator's executive and detonating mechanism, is triggered, and the cumulative cladding collapses with the formation of a powerful cumulative jet, which ensures the penetration of the tank's bottom and the destruction of its internal units and crew. When the tank hits a mine with its tracks, it is interrupted by the explosive action of the explosion of an extended explosive charge.

The mine is intended for remote mining of the terrain with VSM-1 helicopter systems, aviation container systems and RBC, MLRS cluster rockets, UMZ universal minelayer, UMZ-K, PKM-1 portable mining kit, modular kit and other promising systems against modern armored, tracked and wheeled enemy vehicles, and the PTM-4R modification is only manual.
The detonator of these mines also reacts to the approach of a person carrying metal products weighing more than 50-100 grams, in which case the mines become anti-personnel. In a combat position, the mines cannot be neutralized.
Coloring As a rule, the mine is painted in dark green or olive green; The marking is applied in black letters with paint on the body and contains: − PTM-4 or PTM-4R– mine code; − B-01-07 – manufacturer’s code– batch number– year of manufacture (the numbers may be different); − TG-40 – equipment code.
