The design of the POM-2R mine is to stabilize the POM-2 mine in flight when it is installed by remote mining means.

After the long-range cocking time has elapsed, the mine is removed from the cassette holder. The mine is installed on spring-loaded legs in an oriented (close to vertical) position on the ground, the target sensor anchors are spread to the sides at a distance of up to 9.5 meters, manually unwinding the target sensor threads. After that, the mine is transferred to the combat position.
When the target acts on the sensor thread and creates a force of 300 grams or more on the thread on the detonator, the safety-execution mechanism is triggered, which ensures the explosion of the mine.
POM-2R - 4-100 hours; POM-2R1 - 4-100 hours; POM-2RBS - does not have; POM-2R1BS - does not have; The mine (only POM-2R and POM-2R1) has a self-destruction device, which ensures its self-destruction by detonation after 4-100 hours (on average at temperatures of +20 degrees, 23 hours) from the moment of installation (the self-destruction time depends on the temperatures of the air and the surrounding air).
They are installed in groups of 4 together using mechanized mining equipment from the KPOM-2 cassette, and individually manually using the URP device, into which the mine is inserted before use. The mine can be installed only on the ground and only manually. The possibility of installing mines using mechanized equipment is not provided. The URP device is designed for manually installing mines of the POM-2R series and provides the launch of the mine’s remote cocking mechanism and its transfer to a combat position. When preparing for use, the mine in the sub-cassette is inserted into the URP with the B-179 thermal sensor down. Then the red union nut is unscrewed from the URP and the nylon pulling thread is stretched. After that, the mine is installed on the ground. If the mine did not take the correct position after setting, for example, due to falling into deep snow, a swamp, or the target sensors could not take the correct position (they did not deploy in full or not all, or not to the full distance), then the mine still operates in normal combat mode. POM-2 mines can be delivered to enemy positions using the engine from the PG-7 shot, the RPG-7 hand-held anti-tank grenade launcher. At the moment it is not known whether this is a homemade or factory version.
The mine is not subject to demining.
