Designed to disable a person. The damage to a person (or several at the same time) when detonating a mine is caused by ready-made destructive elements (balls or rollers) that fly in the direction of the enemy in a sector along the horizon 540 to a distance of up to 50 m. The height of the destruction sector is from 15 cm near the mine to 4 meters at the limit distance. Two detonator sockets provide two different methods of initiation. For example, the mine can be configured to be initiated by the operator's command in one fuse socket, and also be initiated by the victim through a stretch in another fuse socket. For command initiation, this mine is often used with an electric fuse NM. For initiation by stretch, mechanical fuses of the MUV series are most often used.
The mine has a green or brown plastic body. On the concave side, "MON-50" is printed with the corresponding factory marking. In the Russian version of the mine, on the other convex side, the phrase "K PROTYVNIK" ("to the enemy") is applied in black paint to the plastic. It is not equipped with detonators, but has two plugs with a thread in the upper part for the MD-5M fuse, an EDP-R electrodetonator. Thus, the mine can be activated in one of two ways. For screwing the clamp into wooden surfaces (trees, doors, fences, etc.), it has a rod with a rotary thread. In the lower part of the mine body for attaching the clamp there is a flange with a threaded socket.
The effectiveness of a mine depends very much on how accurately it is aimed. Therefore, in its upper part there is a sight, the field of view of which shows the sapper the zone of impact. If the ground is very soft or the mine is set on snow, then a bag for carrying the mine set, which is filled with soil or snow, is used as a substrate for the mine. The mine can also be attached to various local objects or surfaces using a clamp. To screw the clamp into wooden surfaces (trees, doors, fences, etc.), it has a rod with a rotary thread. In the lower part of the mine body for attaching a tube there is a flange with a threaded socket. The safe distance from the mine to the rear and sides is determined as 35 meters, however, combat practice shows that already at a distance of 12-15 meters, fragments of the body flying to the rear and sides can be avoided.
Recently, there have been reports that MON-50 and MON-90 anti-personnel mines have been found in Ukraine with anti-tip devices or protected by anti-personnel high explosive “sentry” mines. MON-50 mines in Ukraine have also been placed on top of the ML-8 non-removable initiating element. The possibility of extracting these devices using a hook and rope should be considered if booby traps are suspected.
The color is green, brown, light brown, matte or glossy; The marking is standard, applied with black paint on the mine body and contains: − MON-50 - mine code; − B-20-82 - manufacturer's code - batch number - year of manufacture (the numbers may be different); − PVV-5 - equipment code.
