It is intended for mining service or household items - as a surprise mine, with the aim of destroying enemy manpower or as a booby-trap, as a non-extraction device for mines of other types (anti-personnel, anti-tank, object). It can be used as an anti-train detonator when mining railways and a detonator of an object mine for the destruction of various structures. Due to its very small dimensions and very small explosive charge, the MS-4 mine can be used as a booby-trap, a non-extraction device for anti-personnel and anti-tank mines. When using the MS-4 as an object or anti-vehicle mine, it is necessary to strengthen it with a more or less significant explosive charge and, in such cases, it can rather be called a detonator or explosive device, because the explosion of the charge of the MS-4 itself plays the role of a detonator for the main explosive charge.

To perform the tasks assigned to the mine, it is equipped with the following target sensors: 1. Tilt sensor – triggered when the mine tilts by more than 200 in any direction or when the mine moves sharply in any direction; 2. Vibration sensor – triggered by vibration caused by the movement of the vehicle, vibrations of the mine caused by an attempt to move it from its place, pick it up, or attach something to it. 3. Timer – triggered after a set period of time has elapsed, ranging from 15 minutes to 360 hours. The time count is discrete and is determined by the type of installed metal element. The accuracy is low, as it depends significantly on the ambient temperature.

The choice of the nature of the mine's use is made by setting the rotary three-position switch-contactor located under the mine cover to a certain position and setting the timer position: 1. Object mine mode. The timer is on (switch position on the middle contact). 2. Trap mine mode. The timer is on in the remote cocking mechanism mode and the tilt sensor (switch position red circle) or the vibration sensor is on (switch position green wavy line). 3. Anti-vehicle mine mode. The timer is on in the remote cocking mechanism mode and the vibration sensor (switch position green wavy line). After selecting the mode and turning on the mine (long-range firing time - 10-20 minutes) and closing the lid, the mine becomes invulnerable and explodes when trying to open the lid. When used as a non-extraction device, the MC-4 mine is attached (glued or tied) to an anti-tank or anti-personnel mine so that when trying to remove the mine from its installation site, it inevitably tilts or moves with some acceleration. As a result, the MC-4 mine explodes, which in turn leads to the detonation of the main mine. The same mode is used when the MC-4 is used as a booby-trap. In this case, it is attached to an object that an enemy soldier will try to use (weapons, household items, entrance doors and hatches, a table drawer, etc.). When used as an anti-vehicle mine, the MS-4 is placed inside or on the surface of a sufficiently powerful explosive charge, which in turn is placed under the road (railway) track, runway. To trigger the vibration sensor, a tremor of dense soil when a passenger car is moving is enough. However, the reliability of the MS-4 in this capacity is not high, because it does not have any devices that allow adjusting the moment of activation and it can explode prematurely, for example, in front of a heavy truck or armored personnel carrier or due to the rupture of other ammunition on the ground. The explosion in front of the train occurs when it approaches 30-40 meters, which, however, does not save the train from collapse due to the destruction of the railway track.
Demining of the MS-4 mine is prohibited.
Color: The mine body is painted in a matte olive green color. Marking: No marking is applied to the body. There may be small ink triangular seals with the letters OTK and technological marks. Some series of mines may have metal loops on the side walls for securing the mine to an object or explosive charge.
