The mine consists of a cast-iron body with a high explosive charge, a propelling powder charge, a tension cable, an internal firing mechanism, and a fuse.
A person (or several people at the same time) is injured by fragments of the mine body when it is detonated at a height of 60-80 cm from the ground after being thrown with a powder propelling charge, which is triggered when an enemy soldier, having caught his foot on the wire extension, pulls out the detonator's combat check.
There are no non-extraction and non-disarmament elements, but the very high sensitivity of the MUV detonators makes mine neutralization extremely dangerous. Can be set to non-extraction using the MC-3 surprise mine or homemade surprise mines.
The mine is installed manually in the ground, and if it is impossible to install it in the ground - on the ground (in this case, the mine is tied to a peg driven into the ground, just like OZM-3, with the only difference that the length of the wire extension is up to 10 m. In the case of frozen soil and the presence of a snow cover of 15 cm or more, the mine is installed on the surface of the soil, sprinkled with compacted snow on the sides and masked with snow (just like OZM-3). Also, it should be borne in mind that when the soil freezes by 10-16 cm, the powder ejector charge may not eject the mine and, if this does not happen, due to design features, unlike OZM-3, there will be no explosion.
Disposal of OZM-4 mines installed with a MUV-2 or MUV-3 detonator is prohibited. They are destroyed at the installation site by trawling with cats that attack the wire extensions from cover.
Marking: Standard, applied with black paint on the side wall and contains: - OZM-4 – mine code; - IV-8-72 – manufacturer’s code – batch number – year of manufacture (the numbers may be different); - T – equipment code (the BP code may be absent in the marking).
