Designed to destroy hydraulic structures (dams, bridges, sluice gates, water intakes, landing stages, piers, boom barriers), destroy or damage floating bridges, enemy vessels (boats, floating tanks, armored personnel carriers, boats, ferries, rafts, barges, etc.) on flowing water obstacles (rivers). The mine works perfectly against vessels, pontoon bridges, ferries. Quite satisfactorily on wooden bridges. For large bridges on strong stone, reinforced concrete supports, this mine is of little danger. It is not able to cause significant damage to them.
The mine consists of a body, a charge of explosive charge, an intermediate detonator, a float, six side locks, a central lock with a rod, a safety device, a non-disarmament element, a self-liquidator, a power source, an electric ignition device EZU and a detonator capsule No. 8-A. Six side locks are fixed in the cutouts in the upper part of the float, and in the center there is a socket in which the central lock is located. The locks are used to close the mine's electric detonation circuit when it meets an object. All locks are connected to the electric detonation circuit in parallel. The side locks, moved to an inclined position, are closed when the mine collides with ships, pontoons, bridge supports and other structures. The central additional detonator is a cylindrical TNT bomb weighing 240 g with an ignition socket, which is located in the chamber. The central switch with a rod screwed into it serves to close the mine's electric detonation circuit when the rod meets the span structures of low-water and floating bridges, which have a height above the water of no more than 1.5 m. The rod is locked when the rod is tilted together with the sleeve at an angle of 14–20°. The rod is complex, consisting of two main metal links with a total length of 1.2 m and an additional link. The length of the rod with the additional link is 1.8 m.
The safety device with a sugar fuse ensures the safety of the equipment before the mine is installed and includes a current source in the electric detonation circuit after the protection time has expired (after the sugar fuse has dissolved). Each mine is equipped with two sugar fuses in a plastic box. The sugar dissolution time is 5–40 minutes.
The defeat of enemy objects and vehicles is caused by the high-explosive action of the explosion force and water hammer in the water during the explosion of a powerful mine charge when one of the sensors collides with the target. The buoyancy of the mine is calculated so that when it is lowered into the water, only part of the upper surface of the mine remains above the water level - the central and six side target sensors. The mine is lowered into the water upstream of the object being blown up and drifts with the current. When meeting an obstacle, any of the target sensors deflects and closes the mine's combat circuit, causing the explosive charge to explode.
The non-disarming element consists of a spring-loaded button with a contact washer and two contacts connected to the mine's electric detonation circuit. When the chamber is closed, the lid presses on the button and keeps the electric detonation circuit open. When an attempt is made to open the chamber, the electric detonation circuit is closed and the mine explodes.
Self-destruction by detonation occurs if the mine does not encounter a target or other obstacle within a specified time. The CHMV-16 time-delay detonator is used as a self-destruction device.
The mine is lowered into the water upstream of the object being blown up and drifts downstream. When destroying hydraulic structures, the mines are equipped with VPZ-1 detonators and floated to the structure in groups, usually 20–40 pieces, because many of them simply wash up on the shore or explode when they encounter random obstacles (stubble, piles, protruding stones, etc.). But delivering such a large number of mines to the river with their great weight is quite problematic, since their use usually takes place behind enemy lines.
