Designed to incapacitate enemy personnel. The damage to a person is caused by wounding the foot of the foot when the mine charge is detonated at the moment the foot steps on the target sensor, which is the entire area of a semi-soft polyethylene container with a liquid explosive. When a mine is detonated, the foot of the foot with which the soldier stepped on the mine receives significant injuries. Death is possible due to loss of a large amount of blood in the event of untimely medical assistance, but the percentage of deaths is no more than 2-5% of the wounded.
The fuse is made mainly of aluminum, with steel components (springs, locking balls, etc.). The fuse is initiated by hydraulic pressure of the liquid explosive VS-6D in a confined space. The fuse is triggered when a force in the range of approximately 5-25 kg is applied to the mine body. The mine is not designed to remain functional for many years, as it has a lightweight body that can be destroyed by ultraviolet light.

The mine exists in two versions: PFM-1 and PFM-1S. The first version of the mine does not have a self-destruction device, the second is equipped with a device that ensures the self-destruction of the mine by detonation after 1-40 hours from the time of installation (the self-destruction time depends on the ambient air temperature).
The mine can be installed on the ground only by remote mining means of the PKM-1, VSM-1, UMZ, UMZ-K type. Possible options for equipping these mines with artillery shells or multiple launch rocket systems. The possibility of manually installing the mine is not provided. The mines are placed in a universal cassette made of aluminum alloy. There are four types of cassette equipment for these mines: 1. KSF-1 cassette. Holds 72 KSF-1 type mines. Mine throwing range up to 35 meters; 2. KSF-1S cassette (Fig. 5.6.2). Holds 64 KSF-1S type mines. Mine throwing range up to 35 meters; 3. KSF-1S-0.5 cassette. Holds 36 anti-personnel high-explosive mines PFM-1 and 36 anti-personnel high-explosive mines PFM-1S. Mine ejection range 30-35 m; 4. KSF-1S-0.5SK. Holds 36 anti-personnel high-explosive mines PFM-1 and 36 anti-personnel high-explosive mines PFM-1S. Differs from KSF-1S-0.5 in stabilized mine flight range and more uniform distribution in the dispersion ellipse. Mine ejection range 30-35 m . All types of cassettes are identical in appearance, characteristics and differ only in marking. Cassette diameter 140 mm, length 480 mm, cassette weight 9.0-9.4 kg. Inside the cassette are placed mines, a powder ejector charge and an electrocapsule sleeve EKV-30M. The cassettes are placed in a suitable carrier (PKM-1, VSM-1, UMZ, UMZ-K). The mines are fired by an electric pulse supplied from the control panel. The mines are scattered in a scattering ellipse measuring 18-20 by 8-10 meters and are distributed randomly. Kr Kr K the mine has a trigger to ensure uniform placement over the area of the ellipse. The mine can also be installed on the soil surface by means of remote mining: − UMZ (Fig. 5.6.5) and UMZ-K, which use standard cassettes of the KSF-1, KSF-1S, KSF-1S-0.5 type; − VSM-1, which uses aviation cassettes; − ASM-PFM-1S, using aviation containers KMGU (Fig. 5.6.7); − MLRS 9K57 "Hurricane", using 9M27K3 missiles (Fig. 5.6.8). External nodes of the helicopter's weapon suspension are used to install the VSM-1 container (two on each side of the fuselage). Each container is designed to accommodate 29 KSF-1S type cassettes. In total, the Mi-8 helicopter carries 116 KSF-1S cassettes with 7424 mines. The ASM-PFM-1S aviation mine laying system uses aviation containers of the KMGU type. Each container contains 1248 mines. Different aircraft can lift different numbers of KMGU. Thus, Su-25, Su-39 attack aircraft can carry up to 8 KMGU cassettes (9984 PFM-1 mines), Yak-130 up to 6 (7488 mines); Frontline bombers Su-24M, Su-30, Su-34 up to 7 KMGU cassettes (8736 PFM-1 mines); MiG-29, MiG-35 fighters up to 4 (4992 mines). The 9M27K3 missile of the 9K57 Uragan MLRS contains 312 PFM-1S mines, packed in 26 pieces in 12 KPFM-M cassettes. A total of 4992 mines in 16 missiles.
Not deminable. "Mine-proof shoes" that supposedly protect against such mines are ineffective. A mine-proof suit provides reliable protection against these mines if the mine explodes at a distance of about a meter or more from a person, for example, at the time of removing the mine from the site with a shovel, scoop or similar tool. If appropriate, EOD deminers should try to detect the means of delivery to assess the likely size of the minefield. Aluminum KSF-1 clips are sometimes a good visual indicator of the presence of PFM mines. The mine can be relatively easily detected, and although the fuse is made mainly of aluminum, it contains steel components (springs, locking balls, etc.). As a type of remote-controlled mine, these products are usually found on the surface. Due to the toxic contents of the mine, every effort should be made to avoid skin contact and inhalation of vapors in the event of the rupture of the VS-6D explosive charge package.
Green or brown color (Fig. 5.6.9) Outside, PFM-1 and PFM-1S differ in that the PFM-1S mine wing has a clearly visible letter "S". The marking is standard, extruded on the mine wing and contains: − PFM-1S– mine code; − 912-6-80 – manufacturer code– batch number– year of manufacture (the numbers may be different); − VS-6D– equipment code.
