The damage to a person is caused by the destruction of the lower part of the leg (foot) when the mine charge is detonated at the moment when the person steps on the mine target sensor with his foot. Usually, when a mine is detonated, the foot of the enemy soldier's foot with which he stepped on the mine is almost completely destroyed and, depending on the distance of the second leg from the explosion site, it may also be severely damaged or not be damaged at all. Death may occur from pain shock or blood loss in the event of untimely medical assistance. The mine has almost four times less power than the PMN and half that of the PMN-2.
The mine consists of a plastic body with a neoprene cover that covers a pressure plate made of stainless steel. The fuse mechanism is housed in a cast aluminum casing inside the mine body and surrounded by the main explosive charge. The mine is equipped with a steel safety check, which is attached to a wire, which is attached, in turn, to the cocking mechanism.
Removing the safety catch causes the attached wire to rotate the fuse cocking mechanism. This, in turn, releases the spring piston in the viscous gel. The delay in cocking the mine depends on the temperature and ranges from approximately 1 minute at +40°C to 40 minutes at -40°C. Once fully cocked, applying pressure to the pressure plate will lift the block and the spring-loaded striker can impale the mine's detonator.
There are no non-extraction and non-disarmament elements, but the design features exclude the reverse transition of the mine from a combat to a safe state. Can be installed with non-extraction elements MS-3, ML-7 and ML-8
The mine can be installed both on the ground and in the ground, in the snow only manually. The tightness of the mine allows it to be used in water-saturated and marshy soils. Installation of mines under water (coastal strip of water obstacles, fords) is not allowed due to its buoyancy. The mine is installed: - on the surface of the soil; - in the ground with a masking layer of 2 cm; - in the snow with a masking layer of snow of 20 cm; - on fords up to 50 cm deep; - on terrain with vegetation cover that provides camouflage, the mine can be installed on the surface of the soil; - in winter conditions with a snow depth of up to 20 cm, the mine is installed on the ground, and at a greater depth - on compacted snow.
The mine is classified as non-destructive. PMN-4 is not a mine with minimal metal presence and is relatively easy to detect.
The color is light brown with a black cover. The marking is standard. It is applied with black indelible paint on the lower surface of the mine or is extruded there and contains: − PMN-4 - mine code; − 88-16-95 - manufacturer's code - batch number - year of manufacture (the numbers may be different); − T - equipment code. − A red stripe is additionally applied to the lower end surface of the combat mine.
